StoryCorps
Company Overview
StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit project whose mission is to honor and celebrate one another’s lives through listening.
By recording the stories of our lives with the people we care about, we experience our history, hopes, and humanity. Since 2003, tens of thousands of everyday people have interviewed family and friends through StoryCorps. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to take home and share, and is archived for generations to come at the Library of Congress. Millions listen to our award-winning broadcasts on public radio and the Internet. StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, creating a growing portrait of who we really are as Americans.
Company History
StoryCorps began in 2003, with the opening of a StoryBooth recording space in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal. Today, we have 2 StoryBooths (one in Lower Manhattan, the other in San Francisco), 2 MobileBooths (Airstream trailers converted to become mobile recording studios), and a Door-to-Door service (in which we send trained staff and professional recording equipment to organizations and institutions). We also record stories with our StoryKit program, and we provide additional avenues for StoryCorps-inspired conversations through our Do-It-Yourself guides and the National Day of Listening.
In the five years we have been a formal organization, we have recorded nearly 25,000 interviews, with nearly 50,000 people from every state in the nation. We are one of the largest collections of American voices ever gathered.
