Houston Public Media provides Greater Houstonians with free access to informative and inspiring content through a multi-media platform that includes TV 8 | PBS, News 88.7 | NPR and Classical. Every year, more than 3 million people engage with Houston Public Media through our broadcast channels, podcasts, social media platforms, website, mobile app, and streaming.

Focused on delivering high quality local, regional and national content in the areas of news and information, arts and culture, and education, Houston Public Media utilizes its broadcast and online outlets to provide audiences with unprecedented access to the content that is meaningful to them – on air, online, at home and everywhere they go. Houston Public Media is built on 60 years of success in public radio and television, including TV 8's distinction as the nation's first educational public television station. Houston Public Media's ongoing operation is made possible through the generous support of members, sponsors and underwriters through Houston Public Media Foundation a non-profit 501(c)(3). Throughout its history, Houston Public Media has remained committed to service which educates children, informs citizens and lifts the spirits of the community. Houston Public Media's goal, through quality content, is to serve as the catalyst that takes audiences beyond the ordinary, beyond Houston and beyond the world they know.

Houston Public Media is a community service of and licensed by the University of Houston, which is governed by the University of Houston System Board of Regents. The University of Houston's governance policy is enumerated in its MAPP Policies and Procedures.

PBS and NPR
Houston Public Media is a regional leader for both of our major programming partners. Our entire community realizes the benefit of these world-class media organizations as well as the impact of Houston Public Media’s digital and broadcast content.

PBS and its member stations are America’s largest classroom and the nation’s largest space for learning, creative thinking, and
the arts. Through PBS LearningMedia, PBS offers more than 120,000 digital resources to educators and connects more than 1 million teachers across the country.

NPR is one of the nation’s most trusted news organizations and a leading innovator in storytelling and objective journalism. Houston
Public Media is elevating the role of local journalism through The Texas Newsroom and national newsroom collaborations, such as 1A Across America. NPR considers The Texas Newsroom a prototype for the way stations throughout the country can share resources and produce more of the journalism their communities need.

Notable Accomplishments / Recognition

2011

The University of Houston makes the decision to merge television station KUHT- PBS Houston, with radio stations KUHF-News 88.7 and KUHA-Classical 91.7 and its web services under the name Houston Public Media.

2014

Houston Public Media is launched, bringing together TV 8, News 88.7, and Classical 91.7—on air, online, and throughout Southeast Texas, 24/7.

2020-2025

Houston Public Media is well on its journey of transformation into a 21st century public media organization through disruptive innovation. We are convening the community as we rethink all aspects of our operations, products and services. While education
remains fundamental to our purpose and is at the core of all we do, innovation will drive us over the next five years to reach specific goals that are aligned with strategic priorities.
