State Political Reporter

Preferred
WPLN News/Nashville Public Radio
Nashville, Tennessee, United States

Description

WPLN News in Nashville is looking for a reporter who understands that government is not just about laws and policies. It’s about the people who make them, and those who have to deal with their impact.

Is this you? Read on.

Here’s who we are:

  • A fast-growing outlet that feels passionate about covering our community, but also has our eyes on the big, national picture.
  • A diverse team dedicated to expanding representation for people of color in public radio — both in our newsroom and on the air.
  • A collaborative group that wants every reporter to realize their potential on the job, while also living a full life outside of it.

Here’s who you are:

  • You see that politics is about people. A patient who will or won’t receive care. A young adult struggling to find a financial foothold. A student who may or may not go to college. You’ll unearth these stories, help Tennesseans understand the connections and hold the powerful to account.
  • You can own a beat. Previous experience covering politics is not required, but you do need to be able spot a good story. You’ll file spots, develop features and produce The Tri-Star State, a political podcast carried statewide. You’ll also contribute to national shows, telling Tennessee’s story to the rest of the country.
  • You have excellent interpersonal skills — collaborating with a diverse group of individuals, reporting on a wide spectrum of political opinions with respect and asking tough questions of people in power.

We’re looking for candidates with diverse life experiences. At least two years in journalism is preferred. Prior on-air experience is a plus, but not required.

The salary for this position starts at $50,000 and is commensurate with experience.

To apply, please submit 1) your resume, 2) a strong cover letter explaining why you’re right for this position and how you’d improve our coverage, and 3) a selection of personal reporting clips to newsjob@wpln.org. The deadline for this position is April 18, 2021.

We are committed to diversity, equity and inclusivity in our hiring. Nashville Public Radio is an equal opportunity employer.
